In 1961, Bryce D. Jewett, Sr. followed the dream that many people have and opened his own machine shop. He built a 4,000-square-foot building in Richmond, VA. He used family labor to build the foundation - his teenage son Bryce, Jr., nicknamed Skillett (origin not disclosed). The business culture Bryce, Sr. fostered in the early years remains at the core of the business today although much has changed. Skillett grew up in the business and took control in 1981. The plant has expanded twice at its original site and has purchased additional space several blocks away. While Jewett still has a full complement of conventional equipment, state-of-the-art CNC equipment takes up most of the plant's floor space. Jewett Automation provides high tech solutions to custom factory automation. But the culture is still the same: commitment to quality in all work, and fairness to all people.
